Game: Pittsburgh Pirates at Arizona Diamondbacks Apr 16 2012 9:40PM
Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks
Grade: Winner (100)
Reason: Pittsburgh did not get its roadtrip started very well with losses in its first five games but was able to crack the win column on Sunday with a win over the Giants. The Pirates offense has been abysmal as they are hitting .188 on the season which is the worst in all of baseball. They managed four runs yesterday but their 18 runs on the season are by far the lowest in the bigs. Pittsburgh has been one of the worst road teams in baseball over the last few years and is 23-61 in its last 84 road games as an underdog of less that +150. Arizona went 3-3 on its roadtrip, winning a series in San Diego but losing its series in Colorado over the weekend. The pitching was outstanding against the Padres as the Diamondbacks allowed just five runs in three games but the offense scored only eight total runs. It was the complete opposite in Colorado though as the pitching allowed 17 runs while the bats produced 18 runs but they still dropped two of three. Arizona is 3-0 at home while going 36-15 in their last 51 games in Arizona. Erik Bedard will be making his third start of the season and he has pitched good enough to be 2-0 but he has been a victim of that poor offense. He has allowed just three runs over 12 innings but the offense has scored only one run total in his two outings. He went five innings in his first road start, allowing two runs on eight hits so it was not a great outing and now facing a hot Arizona offense will not help matters. He has a career ERA of 4.00 covering 80 road starts. The Diamondbacks counter with Joe Saunders who pitched very well last season as he posted a 3.69 ERA over 33 starts. His first start this season was exceptional as he did not allow a run in seven innings while giving up just four hits against the Padres but he was tagged with the no decision as the offense managed just one run. He closed last season strong and looks to be on pace to start the year just as strong. Arizona is 7-1 in his last eight starts after scoring five runs or more in its previous game. 8* (958) Arizona Diamondbacks
