Game: Colorado Rockies at Houston Astros Apr 6 2012 7:05PM
Prediction: Houston Astros
Grade: Loser (-100)
Reason: 15* Play on Houston. We'll gladly take the underdog payout here and back the better pitcher in his home ballpark when the Houston Astros host the Colorado Rockies tonight. Jeremy Guthrie gets the ball the Rockies, and while he was likely happy to get out of Baltimore we expect to be fading him often early on this season.
Guthrie didn't fare well on the road last season, going just 5-10, and it may take some time for him to adjust to a new league of hitters. And even more importantly, he started off slow early in the year by accruing a 1-6 record in his first eight starts.
Wandy Rodriguez is a good pitcher stuck on a bad team, but we think the hoopla surrounding opening day combined with Guthrie's bad early season and road trends will allow the Astros to give Rodriguez some much-need run support here. Rodriguez finished the 2011 season with a good 3.49 ERA and had a .500 record - not bad for being on a bad Houston team. He'll be the opening day starter after Brett Myers moved to the closer role, and we look for an inspired performance from him in his first opening day start. Guthrie struggles as Houston opens the season with a victory! 15* Play on Houston.
