Game: Florida at Marquette Mar 22 2012 10:15PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: Florida has had a very easy time in getting into the Sweet 16 and it caught a very big break with Missouri going down against Norfolk St. The Gators have won their first two games by 26 and 34 points which is a rarity in this tournament, no matter the competition. The 30 ppg scoring margin is the highest average of victory of any remaining team in the Sweet 16 and does one major thing and that is it adds value on the Marquette side. The Golden Eagles should be favored by more but they aren't. By now you are probably aware that the Gators rely heavily on the long ball and we saw it in the first two games they played in the tournament. They were able to easily win both games despite bad shooting from behind the arc but they still jacked up 51 treys, making only 14 (27.5 percent). It can be argued that Florida can still win if the threes aren't going in but a lot of that changes because of matchups. Marquette allows just 31.8 percent from the floor which is 63rd in the nation and that drops to 25 percent in its last five games. We cannot forget the fact that Florida closed the regular season with three straight losses and lost four of five heading into the NCAA Tournament. Winning big has inspired some confidence but now the Gators take a big step up in competition and they will be facing a better seeded team for the first time. Marquette is known for its speed, strength and toughness and they have the better overall adjusted ranking on both offense and defense and that balance will turn out to be the difference here. The Golden Eagles are ranked in the top 65 in both two-and three-point shooting defense and they also force turnovers at a high rate which can disrupt the Florida flow. Marquette is ranked in the Top 30 in adjusted offensive efficiency while the Gators are outside of the top 80 on defense. The Golden Eagles are shooting 33.9 percent from long range but the Gators to not defend the perimeter very well. One key stat is that Marquette is 15-4 ATS in its last 19 games against teams averaging 21 or more three-pointers per game. 10* (818) Marquette Golden Eagles
