Game: Miami Marlins at Cincinnati Reds Apr 7 2012 7:10PM
Prediction: Cincinnati Reds
Grade: Loser (-130)
Reason: At 7:10 pm, our selection is on the Cincinnati Reds over the Miami Marlins. After thinking that the Reds should be an N.L. Contender for the past few seasons, with guys like Brandon Philips, Jay Bruce, Johnny Cueto, and Joey Votto, many people have jumped off the bandwagon now and are not rating them as likely Central Division Pennant Winners. But the fact is that this is still a pretty darn good group of players, and they added an ace to their arsenal in the off-season in righthander Mat Latos when they traded for the 23-year-old strikeout artist in exchange for Edinson Volquez - who the Reds were finally fed up with - and three other players. Latos should more than make up for the loss of Volquez in the Cincy rotation as he had a 3.47 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 185 strikeouts last season (after a dominant 2010 when he allowed two runs or less in 15 straight starts). Latos should be thrilled to be with a team where he has a much better chance of finishing the year with winning record than he did with the Padres. For the Marlins, this team had better find a way to score runs or it could be a very long season for Ozzie Guillen and Co. as the win-less Fish have scored a grand total of one run in their two losses, one of which was to this Reds team on Thursday. And they're batting just .119 overall! Cincinnati is now 7-3 vs. the Marlins in the last 10 meetings, and the Reds scored 8 and 5 runs in Nolasco's two starts vs. them last season. Take the Reds. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
