Game: Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues Apr 4 2012 8:05PM
Prediction: St. Louis Blues
Grade: Loser (-140)
Reason: At 7:35 pm, our selection is on the St. Louis Blues over the Detroit Red Wings. It's hard to believe, but the title of "best in the West" in the NHL won't go to the Detroit Red Wings this season. The perennial NHL powerhouse - and arguably best professional hockey team of the last quarter-century - is going to finish no better than third in the Western Conference as the Wings currently have 99 points compared to the St. Louis Blues 106 and Vancouver Canucks 107 points. The other - and potentially bigger - problem for the Red Wings is that they are 31-8 at home, but just 16-24 on the road and that incredible home-road bias could certainly hurt them tonight (and in the post-season) against arguably the best team in the NHL in the toughest place to play in the league. If that road record seems sub-par, it gets much worse when you consider recent history. The Wings are 1-10 in their last 11 games away from Detroit. And the Blues are 37-15 in their last 52 home games. Finally, the home team has (not surprisingly) won all 5 meetings this year, and the Blues, who last played on Saturday, are 7-0 their last seven at home when playing with 3+ days of rest. Take St. Louis. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
