Game: Washington St. at Pittsburgh Mar 28 2012 7:00PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: At 7:00 PM EST on Wednesday, we will be playing the Pittsburgh Panthers minus the points versus the Washington Cougars in Game Two of the College Basketball Invitational. Pittsburgh (20-17) lost the first game of this best of three series on Monday by a 67-66 score at Washington State. While the onus was on the Cougars to win that opening game, now the pressure is on Pittsburgh to tie this series up and force a deciding Game Three on their home court. The Panthers have covered the point spread in 4 straight games after a straight up loss. While Pittsburgh did not meet expectations -- in part due to the midseason injury to point guard Tray Woodall -- the Panthers did sport a solid 13-7 record on the road with an average winning margin of +6.6 PPG. They also have covered 4 of their last 5 home games as a favorite in the 7-12.5 point range.
Washington State (19-16) gutted out their win versus Pittsburgh by shooting 51.2% from the field while nailing 9 of their 15 shots from behind the arc. They are unlikely to enjoy as a nice shooting performance in this one. The Cougars have won their last two games in the CBI with their leading scorer in junior forward Brock Motum only a couple of minutes before spraining his right ankle. Motum remains listed as doubtful for this one and we do not expect him to play since this is a not a must-win situation for the Cougars. In fact, since there will be some incentive for Washington State to save their energy for a deciding third game, don't be surprised if Pittsburgh pulls away in the end to cover the 9-10 point spread. The loss of Motum will be tough to deal with on the road where the Cougars are just 6-8 with an average losing margin of -3.0 PPG. Lastly, Pittsburgh is supported by a nice empirical bounce-back angle that has been 67% effective over the last five seasons. Favorites playing their second game in the last three days coming off a loss on the road by three points or less have then rebounded to cover the point spread in 78 of the last 116 situations where these conditions applied. 25* CBB Wednesday Night Special Feature with the Pittsburgh Panthers minus the points versus the Washington Cougars. Best of luck for us -- Frank.
