Game: Washington St. at Pittsburgh Mar 28 2012 7:00PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: I'm laying the points with Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. I had Pitt on these pages on Monday and while some pushed, most lost with the mid-day line move when Wazzou beat the Panthers by one point. But once again, Washington State's leading scorer and leading rebounder, Brock Motum is not expected to play in tonight's contest. Motum, averaging 18 ppg and over 6 rpg, injured his ankle after just a couple of minutes of action in Wazzou's win over Oregon State. Motum has not practiced since the injury and missed game one of this best of 3 series. And remember, the Cougars already lost starting guard Faisal Aden for the season about 7 weeks ago. Motum and Aden were the only two Cougar players averaging more than 9.6 ppg. It should be noted that Wazzou ranked 233rd in the nation with an average of just 33.3 rpg...and that was with Motum. Now, without their only decent rebounder, they'll face a Pitt Panther squad that owns a hefty plus-9 rebound margin per game. Abe Lodwick filled-in nicely for Motum each of the last two games, but to expect a third bust-out night in a row...in Pittsburgh, is asking a bit much. Lodwick went into Monday's game averaging just 6.6 ppg and 4.2 rpg. While WSU doesn't have many "outs," no less than seven players score between 14.8 and 6 ppg for Pitt. Tray Woodall and Lamar Patterson are the best "creators" on the floor and both side with the Big East entry. I mentioned on Monday that Pitt ranks 64th in the latest Pomeroy rankings, while Washington State ranks 89th. Pitt played the nation's 43rd toughest schedule, Wazzou faced the 102nd. And the Cougars are 184th in the RPI rankings. Pittsburgh is 13-3 SU against teams ranked 101st or worse in the RPI rankings even after Monday's loss. Pitt's in a strong overall spot tonight. Favorites off a road loss by 3 points or less are on a 78-38 ATS run. Pittsburgh is 10-1 ATS in this spot with Dixon as coach. And finally, the Panthers are on a 4-0 ATS run following a SU loss. Wazzou played one of their biggest home games ever on Monday and were fortunate to win by a point. I'm betting Pittsbugh bounces back in style. I'm laying the points with Pitt on Wednesday. Thanks! GL! Scott.
