Game: Ohio State at Kansas Mar 31 2012 8:45PM
Prediction: Ohio State
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 25* Play on Ohio State. There's an emerging trend with this Ohio State team in revenge spots, and although it has been rare (four times this season), they've proved to us that they take these revenge spots seriously. The Buckeyes got a chance to exact revenge against Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan - winning all three of those games by double-digits in easy covers. And their last chance was a tougher spot - playing with revenge from a home loss against Michigan State in the regular season finale, and the Buckeyes won outright in East Lansing for a share of the Big Ten regular season title.
Now Ohio State plays with revenge against the Jayhawks from an early-season loss in Kansas. The Buckeyes are a much better team now than the team Kansas beat back in early December, and most importantly they will be playing this game with Jered Sullinger down low - something they didn't have the first time around.
Kansas came up big late against North Carolina, which was the only game so far in this tournament that their offense looked anything like the dominant force they've been this season. Ohio State has been nails on defense in this tournament, shutting down their first three foes to 66 points or less while holding #1 seed Syracuse to just 41% shooting in their seven-point win on Saturday. And while their defense has been consistent - it's been their offense that has been dominant - especially in their games against top-tier defensive units in Cincinnati and Syracuse.
Sullinger down low combined with Thomas and Buford from the perimeter are a tough matchup for any defense, but the attention to defense (especially Aaron Craft) has given this Buckeys team more opportunities in transition. Not sure how Kansas can keep up with Ohio State here with their inconsistent scoring, and the fact that the Buckeyes are a small favorite here proves who the better team is. Ohio State scored more and allowed less points that Kansas did in a much tougher conference, and we give them the edge on both ends of the court. Buckeyes pull away late to a surprisingly comfortable win! 25* Play on Ohio State.
