Game: New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers Mar 21 2012 7:05PM
Prediction: Philadelphia 76ers
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: Play on Philadelphia at 7:05 ET. The Knicks have yet again built up a nice little win streak against inferior competition, including last night's 106-87 win North of the Border against the Raptors. Playing in the second night of back to backs, with a step up in class to boot, is no place we want to be backing this team. Sure they are 4-0 SU/ATS for interim HC Mike Woodson. But they are also 0-6 SU this season when playing w/ out rest and taking on a rested foe. The Sixers have very clearly stated that they want to win the Atlantic Division. The Celtics could care less and probably couldn't even if they tried. That leaves taking care of a Knicks team that is currently four games back. Philly just beat New York up in MSG 10 days ago by 12 points. They have been a very good home team this year, going 14-6 ATS when laying points due in large part to a defense that holds foes to just 84.4 PPG here. After playing Miami & Chicago, the Sixers dropped in class and rocked Charlotte by 25 on Monday. This should be no problem. Take Philadelphia.
Game: Minnesota Timberwolves at San Antonio Spurs Mar 21 2012 8:35PM
Prediction: San Antonio Spurs
Grade: Winner (100)
Reason: Play on San Antonio at 8:35 ET. This shapes up as a terrible spot for the visiting Timberwolves, who are now without the services of PG Ricky Rubio for the remainder of the season and facing a Spurs team that has had three days to simmer over a seven-point road loss to Dallas on Saturday. Prior to that loss, San Antonio was scoring in bunches, averaging a very nice 114.8 PPG. Not only are the Spurs 15-7 ATS at home this season, but they are also 12-4 ATS after failing to cover in their previous game. Minnesota had been 1-4 ATS w/out Rubio prior to an outright win over the Warriors Monday night, which was the same game that featured that bizzare halftime "uprising" of Golden State fans against ownership. There is no such unrest in the Alamo. Though they are 2-0 SU/ATS vs. the Spurs so far this season, Minnesota has lost 14 times in a row here in San Antonio. Manu Ginobili is also back for the home side. Fatigue could be an issue here for the young T'wolves, who are playing the sixth game of a seven-game road trip. Take San Antonio.
Game: Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks Mar 21 2012 9:35PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 10* Under LA Lakers/Dallas at 9:35 ET. Lenny spent years working on an NBA "totals system" and began using it in January '07 on the net, with great success. It's based on numerous factors, some of them listed here. Anticipated pace and style of both teams' play. Days of rest for teams or lack of it. Number of points scored by starters as compared to subs in recent outings (plus season-long averages). It also factors in point and rebounding differentials of the two teams. With all these factors (and many more), it's not possible to provide Lenny's "typical analysis" with his NBA totals selections. Starting last year, he is now supplying trends & stats to supplement the plays. The previous two matchups between these teams this season have each seen less than 187 pts scored. The Mavs have just got done playing the five worst defensive teams in the league during a six-game stretch (Spurs are the exception). These are the two top defensive teams in the conference at 92.7/game (Dallas) and 93.2/game (Lakers). LA averages just 93.7 PPG on the road while Dallas is allowing just 91.2 at home. The Mavs are the second lowest scoring team overall in the Western Conference. 10* Under LA Lakers/Dallas.
