Game: Illinois State at Stanford Mar 19 2012 11:30PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 20* Play on Stanford. We backed the Cardinal in their first game of this NIT Tournament - a dominating 11-point win and cover against a Cleveland State team that came in to Stanford in a bad motivational spot. Similar situation here tonight, as the the Cardinal now host another team flying in from the midwest in Illinois State who also comes into this game in a bad motivational spot and we look for a similar result here.
The Redbirds are in a big letdown spot here after upsetting #2 seed Mississippi in their tournament opener - in overtime no less - and needed every one of their 17 three-point makes to notch the win. Illinois State went an unbelievable 17-23 from beyond the three-point arc in that game, and obviously we don't look for a repeat shooting performance from the Redbirds here tonight as Illinois State is only averaging 8 three-point makes in 22 attempts on the season.
Stanford is very good on their home court, going 15-3 straight up and winning those games by an average of 12 points per game. But like their matchup against the Cleveland State Vikings, it's their defensive pressure that makes this game an extremely good matchup for the Cardinal, as they hold opponents to just 59 points on 41% shooting here on this floor. And despite their offensive outburst against the Rebels, Illinois State is not what we would consider a good offensive club, in fact they have been held to under 38% shooting in four of their previous five games prior to their upset win. Defense too good for the Redbirds to duplicate their shooting performance, and they fall big to Stanford here tonight! 20* Play on Stanford.
