Game: Butler at Pennsylvania Mar 19 2012 8:00PM
Grade: Winner (100)
Reason: 15* Play on Butler. We'll gladly back Butler as we feel they are the better team in this matchup vs. Pennsylvania, and with this contest being a virtual pick 'em (line is a pick as of this writing), we feel confident Butler will not only win this game, but win going away. The Bulldogs had a rough start to their season but have improved greatly since that poor start, and enter this contest winners of eight of their last ten with their only losses coming against a Valparaiso team that dominated the Horizon League (Butler lost twice vs. Valparaiso).
Penn plays a very slow-paced style of basketball, and in fact they have scored 57 points or less four times in their last six games - winning three of those contests. But this Butler team is also very good defensively and won't be out of their comfort zone in a low-scoring game. The Bulldogs only allow 61 points per game on the season and have held eight of their last ten opponents to less than 60 points.
The difference here is on offense, and that is where we feel Butler has the big advantage. The Bulldogs have scored 70+ points in three of their last four games, and they do face tough, underrated defenses in the Horizon League. Also, after not making it to the NCAA Tournament this year, the Bulldogs seem to be playing with a chip on their shoulder as they dominated Delaware by 17 points in their first round victory. Butler is an awesome 11-2 ATS in postseason tournament games, and we look for them to pull away in the second half to an easy win! 15* Play on Butler.
Game: Princeton at Pittsburgh Mar 19 2012 7:00PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 15* Play on Princeton. While we do expect Pittsburgh to win this game outright, we're taking the points here with Princeton, as the Tigers have more than enough offensive firepower and an underrated defense to stay close to the Panthers after 40 minutes of play here tonight. The Tigers scored 95 points on 60% shooting in their first round win against Evansville, but it's their defensive play of late that convinced us they can stay close to Pittsburgh here.
Princeton has held four of their last five opponents to under 40% shooting, and here they face a Pitt offense that has been wildly inconsistent this season, especially in their last ten games where they have shot under 40% in five of those ten contests. The Tigers are only allowing 61 points per game on the season, and we expect them to frustrate Pitt just enough here to curtail any extended runs the Panthers may go on, and keep this score in the 60's.
That puts a ton of pressure on Pittsburgh to cover this big number, and in a game that we expect to be played at a slower pace, it's that much harder for a team to cover a big pointspread in this type of atmosphere. Princeton has shot very well of late, hitting at least 50% of their shot attempts in seven of their last nine games overall, and we just don't see the Panthers pulling away here for a blowout victory. Pitt doesn't own a dominant home court advantage, losing seven times here at home this season, and we look for the Tigers to move to 9-1 ATS in the month of March with this game coming down to the wire! 15* Play on Princeton.
Game: Wyoming at Washington St. Mar 19 2012 10:00PM
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 15* Play on Wyoming. We're not at all fans of the Pac-12 this season, fading several Pac-12 teams with success so far in the College Basketball postseason, and we'll do so again here as we look for Wyoming to win this game outright as a small road favorite. Washington State played well over their heads in a 14-point win at San Francisco their last time out, shooting 60% from the floor and scoring 89 points - easily their best offensive night since the second week of December. We look for the Cougars to come back down to Earth against a very good defensive club in the Cowboys and for that defensive effort to lead Wyoming to the outright win.
Washington State has been very sporadic on both ends of the court, and we look for the Cowboys to slow the pace of this game down to a crawl and frustrate the Cougars in a tough half-court style of play. WSU has been held to scores of 64, 43, 46, and 55 points in the four game prior to that outburst against San Francisco, and it won't take much effort for the Cowboys to control this game tempo.
Wyoming has a tough time competing with teams that own potent offenses, but they are more than capable of playing well against teams that have tough times running up the score. This matchup is the perfect scenario for Wyoming to succeed, and we expect nothing short of an outright win by the Cowboys here tonight! 15* Play on Wyoming.
