Game: St. Louis at Memphis Mar 16 2012 6:50PM
Prediction: Memphis
Grade: Loser (-110)
Reason: 20* Play on Memphis. We like this year's St. Louis team and likely would have backed them against a different opponent, but as it stands we do not like the way the Billikens matchup against the Memphis Tigers here, and we'll back the #8 seed here to pull away in the second half to a comfortable victory. Both Memphis and St. Louis come in riding a ton of momentum, but statistically speaking the Tigers are peaking at the right time - especially on the offensive end of the court.

And that is where we give the Tigers a big edge in this contest, as Memphis has hit at least 50% of their field goal attempts in four of their last six games overall, and are shooting 49% on the season. Even better, those numbers rise on away from home (vary rare), where Memphis scores 77 points per game on 50.1% shooting.

St. Louis has a good offense - not as good as the Tigers - but their defense has been a concern of late and we're not convinced they can shut Memphis down here today. The Billikens allow 6.5 more points per game on the road than they do overall on the season, and more importantly they have not done well on the defensive end of the court against the better teams they have faced. Temple, UMass, St. Bonaventure, and most recently Xavier (in their last game played) all shot over 50% from the floor against them, and this Memphis offense is better than all four of those teams. Billikens are just 2-9 against the spread away from home after a straight up loss, and Memphis is too much for St. Louis to handle here today!
