Friday night the New Jersey Nets find themselves in a situation they've experienced only three previous times this season - off a straight up victory. At 4-40 SU on the year and chasing league infamy, the closest thing resembling a win streak that the team had had is back in early December when they won twice in a three-game stretch. Off their three previous SU victories, the Nets are 1-2 ATS with an average margin of defeat coming by 11 points per game.
If there is one team they would want to play right now, it would have to be tonight's opponent the Washington Wizards. With both Gilbert Arenas and Jarvaris Crittenton suspended for the year and the situation behind them, the Wiz will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak that has seen them fail to cash at the betting window their last three games. Washington is currently 14-30 for the year and ahead of only New Jersey in the Eastern Conference standings. They have lost eight of their last 10 games overall.
Back to the Nets. Prior to their 103-87 win over the Clippers Wednesday night, the team was 0-11 SU in January with an average margin of defeat nearing 20 PPG, which was approaching the worst month ever by an NBA team. They are still ahead of the pace set by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers (9-73) for worst single-season record in league history. Their point differential of -12.4 PPG is easily the worst of all 30 teams.
Three of New Jersey's four wins this season have come at home. They have already set an NBA record by opening the season with 18 consecutive defeats and were tied with the 1993-94 Dallas Mavericks for worst record ever through 43 games. By beating the Clippers, the club was able to snap a 29-game losing streak vs. Western Conference teams. They have had three losing streaks of 10+ games already this season.
It hasn't happened much, but New Jersey could be favored in this game. They have been favored just three times all season and lost outright every time. The oddsmakers are a bit slow in attaching a betting line to this game as the Nets starting backcourt of Devin Harris and Courtney Lee are both listed as questionable. Neither suited up in Wednesday's win.
These teams have met only one other time this season and it was the Wizards emerging with an easy 123-104 win in the Nation's Capital back on Halloween night. Washington has covered in each of its previous four visits to the Izod Center, including two double-digit SU victories last season.
Totals players take note that the Nets have gone Under in four straight games.
