Boston at Chicago
Friday, July 29th, 8:10 ET

(matchup)

Keep your socks on Friday night as Boston meets suddenly surging Chicago at US Cellular Field for the start of a three-game series. The Red Sox come in with the best record in the American League (64-39), but have opened up as slight underdogs on the money line in this one vs. a White Sox team that has won four of its last five to climb within one game of .500.

Boston just split a four-game set with lowly Kansas City, including a 4-3 loss yesterday afternoon as huge -290 money line favorites with Josh Beckett on the mound. Despite scoring 25 runs total in their two wins over the Royals, the Red Sox were a costly MLB pick if you played them all four games, losing 3.65 units. They were -270 favorites in their other loss, which occurred in Monday’s series opener.

The AL East leaders were swept by these White Sox back in late May at Fenway, losing every game by at least three runs and dropping 5.10 units total as they were significant favorites in every game. Boston is 0-2 this season when playing with revenge for a three-game sweep. They have also not had much success vs. Chicago, looking back, as they are just 5-13 the last 18 head to head matchups (-11.8 units).

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will get the start for the Red Sox tonight. The team has won his previous four starts, even though Wakefield has given up at least nine hits in all of those outings. His ERA over his previous three starts is 6.50 with a WHIP of 1.778. He did not factor into the decision, a 7-4 Boston loss, when he started against the White Sox earlier in the season. Overall, Wakefield has a 6-13 team start record when facing Chicago.

The man who opposed Wakefield back on June 1st will also get the start tonight for Chicago, and that’s Gavin Floyd. The right hander has never lost to Boston in six career starts, but did not necessarily pitch great in this season’s earlier meeting, allowing four runs off nine hits.

Floyd will be going for his third straight win in as many starts after winning back to back road games vs. division opponents. In his last start, he didn’t allow a run in 7.7 IP against Cleveland, and allowed only four hits.

Overall, Chicago has won 13 of 15 games vs. Boston, including six straight. They are by no means out of it in the crowded AL Central, trailing first place Detroit by three games entering Friday.
