Pittsburgh at Atlanta
Tuesday, July 26th, 7:10 ET

(matchup)

The Pittsburgh Pirates made the most of their first national TV appearance in ages, beating the Atlanta Braves 3-1 as huge +185 underdogs Monday night. Can they do it again Tuesday? One thing is for certain and that’s the Bucs have been a solid MLB pick as an underdog of +150 or more this season, now 13-9 after last night’s win. The online sportsbooks have opened them as +170 underdogs on the betting line tonight vs. Tommy Hanson.

Making the Pirates even more attractive on the money line this evening is the fact that Braves’ starter Hanson has a 5-9 team start record as a favorite of -175 to -250. Another MLB trend to consider is that Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens has a 9-2 TSR in night games this season.

Karstens has been really sharp of late as well with a 0.78 ERA his last three starts, but his two wins both were against vs. the worst team in baseball betting, the Houston Astros. Karstens has never faced Atlanta previously.

Hanson is off back to back poor starts, allowing 11 runs in 11.3 innings. Last year, he lost his only career start vs. the Pirates, losing 3-1 as a -200 favorite.

Unlike Karstens, Hanson strikes out a lot of hitters. He averages 9.7 K’s per nine innings, second best in the majors, compared to just 4.8 for Karstens.

What Karstens does have, however, is the second lowest ERA in the National League (2.28). Incredibly, he was just 9-22 in 41 starts the previous three seasons, so this year has been a big turnaround.

Of course, it’s been a big turnaround overall for the Pirates in 2011. They enter Tuesday tied for first place in the National League Central and already have nine more road wins than they had all of last season. They have been a great MLB pick in road games, currently up 13.4 units.

Totals bettors might be looking to go Under the number in this game. That could be wise considering Atlanta’s 19-8 Under record at home when the total is 7 or less since the start of last season.
