Texas at LA Angels

(matchup)

It’s now 12 wins and counting for the Texas Rangers, who remain the hottest team in baseball betting. The question for tonight is will 13 be a lucky or unlucky number for the defending American League Champs? The oddsmakers are thinking “unlucky” as they have opened the Rangers as +120 underdogs on the betting line.

Last night’s 7-0 loss for the Angels was pretty rare considering their 29-11 home record vs. division opponents. Los Angeles had only four hits and lost for the fourth time in five games overall, all against AL West teams. Over the weekend, they dropped three of four to Oakland.

Texas is now a season-high 15 games over .500 as the franchise is on its longest winning streak since 1991 (14 games). They now lead the Angels by five games in the division and have outscored opponents 77-24 in the 12 wins, which now includes five shutouts following last night. Four of them have come in the last six games, a stretch that has seen the Rangers allow just two runs total.
Obviously, this makes Texas look like a very attractive underdog MLB pick this evening, particularly with starter Derek Holland on the mound. Holland has thrown back to back complete game shutouts, allowing just nine hits vs. division rivals Seattle and Oakland. Texas won those two games by a combined 11-0 margin. Holland has actually pitched better on the road this season with a 3.20 ERA in nine starts.
Dan Haren will get the baseball for the Angels. He faced Holland earlier in the year, with neither factoring into the decision, a 3-2 final in favor of LA. Haren has pitched very well this season, but has not necessarily been a great
MLB pick. He has a 2.84 ERA in 20 starts with a 116-20 KW ratio, but the team is just 11-9 in those games and has actually lost money thanks to poor run support.
Haren had won four straight starts (including two 1-0 finals) before losing his last outing at Oakland in one of his poorer efforts of the season so far. It was only the third start of the season where Haren allowed at least 10 hits. He has pitched very well at home with a 1.86 ERA in nine starts.
