Arizona at St. Louis

(matchup)

An interesting series gets underway tonight in St. Louis with the Cardinals hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks. These two clubs come in with identical 47-41 records, but Arizona has been the bigger money maker thanks to some underdog betting lines. The D’backs are the underdog again tonight, obviously, opening at +135 odds on the money line.
The Cardinals missed a chance for a sweep, losing a real slugfest to Cincinnati yesterday. The 9-8 final bodes well for the Redbirds however, considering the team is a perfect 10-0 this season following a game where 15 or more total runs were scored. Be sure to check out all our

This is only the second series between these teams all season. St. Louis won the first, taking two of three games in Arizona. All three games were high-scoring with at least 10 runs scored in every game, including final scores of 13-8 and 15-5 in two of the contests. Five of the last six meetings here in the Gateway City however have stayed Under the total. Tonight’s over/under line has opened at 9 runs.
For the purposes of making
MLB picks, it is always important to analyze the pitching matchup. Arizona has the hotter of the two starters tonight with lefty Joe Saunders taking the hill. Saunders has a 2.14 ERA over his last three starts, which were all on the road with Arizona winning twice as an underdog.
St. Louis counters with righty Kyle McClellan, who has not been nearly as effective of late. In fact, the team has lost each of the previous five times he’s taken the mound, getting outscored 37-6! The last time McClellan won a decision was all the way back on May 24th.
The Cardinals could be tired after playing a 13-inning marathon last night. They were down 8-0 to the Reds after five innings, but rallied all the way back and forced extra innings with a run scored in the bottom of the ninth. Albert Pujols made his much ballyhooed return to the lineup, but was just 1 for 6 at the plate.
Arizona also lost yesterday, falling to Milwaukee 3-1 in a matinee. The D’backs are now 3-3 on a current 10-game road trip.
