It's always a big deal when the Yankees and Red Sox meet and the two division rivals start a weekend set in the Bronx tonight with New York a small home favorite behind Bartolo Colon. Boston counters with Clay Buchholz as both teams look to bounce back from consecutive losses.
The Red Sox were swept in a short two-game set by Toronto earlier in the week. They are still three games under .500, trailing first place Tampa Bay by 4.5 games. It's not often that we find Boston as an underdog on the money line, but they are here. In fact, this will be just the fourth time all season Boston is priced as a dog and they are 2-1 previously, including a 4-0 win over the Yankees and CC Sabathia last month.
The Yankees have some making up to do for their backers after killing them in back to back losses vs. Kansas City on Wednesday & Thursday. They were favorites of -215 and -200 in the two losses respectively. Last night, they were destroyed 11-5.
When these two rivals met last month at Fenway Park, Boston took two of three games. Tonight's starter Buchholz was on the hill for the lone Red Sox loss as he didn't even last four innings, allowing five runs in a 9-4 loss. Buchholz has never had much luck in his career vs. the Yanks with a 1-5 team start record and 6.25 ERA.
Bartolo Colon will be facing Boston for the first time since 2005. He has been effective in four starts this season with a 3.81 ERA and in seven overall appearances, he's 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA. He is off his least productive outing yet, allowing five runs in 4.3 IP at Texas in a 7-5 loss.
