It’s an unlikely Final tonight in Madison Square Garden when eighth seed Georgetown takes on second seed West Virginia for the Big East Championship. Few expected the Hoyas to be here as they will try to win for the fourth time in four days while WVU has held rank and will be looking to earn their first cover of the tournament. The Mountaineers have opened as 2.5-point favorites at the majority of our online recommended sportsbooks.
These teams met just one time during the regular season. West Virginia was an 81-68 winner in Morgantown and covered the 7.5-point spread. At the time, Georgetown was struggling as the loss was the fourth, both SU and ATS, in five games. They have not lost since rattling off a four-game SU/ATS win streak. West Virginia has won five straight, but is just 2-3 ATS during that stretch.
While Georgetown’s seven Big East Tournament championships are more than any other team, the Mountaineers have never won this event. Obviously, that has a lot to do with the fact that Hoyas are a charter member of the league. A win tonight and West Virginia has an outside shot at garnering a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, although it’s unlikely.
Of the top four seeds in this event, all of whom received double-byes, WVU was the only one to survive the quarterfinal round. As mentioned earlier, however, they are 0-2 against the spread with wins over Cincinnati and Notre Dame coming by a combined five points. In their last three games alone, they had to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Villanova in overtime, shot 35.0 percent against Cincinnati needing a buzzer beater to pull out the win, and nearly blew a 10-point lead in the final six minutes against the Fighting Irish.
Take note that West Virginia is a perfect 7-0 ATS this season after failing to cover the spread in their previous two games. Opponents are shooting just 33.7% against the Mountaineers in this tournament.
Georgetown is arguably playing its best basketball of the season. They have already upset top-seeded Syracuse and now look to oust WVU from the Big East Tournament for the second time in four years.
