Defending National Champ North Carolina is tumbling and tumbling fast. Ranked just 24th in the latest polls, the Tar Heels are in danger of suffering their first three-game losing streak during the tenure of Head Coach Roy Williams. They look to avoid that fate Wednesday night back in Chapel Hill against visiting Wake Forest. The oddsmakers are projecting a fairly comfortable UNC win here installing them as 6.5-point favorites.

The last time the Tar Heels lost more than two in a row was nearly seven years ago when they dropped five straight, the year prior to Williams returning to his alma mater. Things have gotten ugly of late as Carolina has not only dropped back to back ACC contests to Clemson and Georgia Tech, but they also lost on the road to College of Charleston, as 13.5-point favorites, on January 4th.

The problem for North Carolina has been turnovers. They rank near the bottom of the league with 16.9 per game and turned it over 43 times in the pair of losses last week. Georgia Tech jumped all over them on Saturday, taking a 20 point lead just 12 minutes into the game before holding off a furious Tar Heels rally in the second half. The starting backcourt of Ginyard and Drew combined to shoot just 2 of 12 from the field with seven turnovers.

Wake Forest hasn’t exactly been tearing it up either and could be just the opponent UNC has been looking for. The Demon Deacons have lost both ACC road games thus far, including a 20-point loss at Duke on Sunday as they shot less than 40% from the floor for the second time in three games.

The trends suggest that this will be a bounce back spot for the favorite. North Carolina is a perfect 7-0 ATS off a SU loss as a favorite the last three seasons and 26-9 ATS off a loss by six points or less since 1997.

Wake snapped a four-game series losing streak with a 92-89 victory in Winston-Salem last year as seven-point underdogs. North Carolina had also covered all four previous games.
