Free NFL Pick: Take Denver Under 7.5
Denver rookie Head Coach Josh McDaniels came in like a storm in 2009 as controversies slewed across the airways with unhappy players and “he said, he said” rhetoric. First it was quarterback Jay Cutler who demanded a trade after learning that McDaniels was in hot pursuit of Matt Cassel, whom he coached at New England. Cassel signed with Kansas City and Cutler was still unhappy, so much so that the Broncos shipped off the young talent to Chicago for another QB in Kyle Orton. Then shortly afterwards had a tiff with star wide receiver Brandon Marshall which resulted in a Marshall suspension. Marshall left after the year in a trade with Miami. McDaniels no nonsense approach worked out early on as they started out 6-0 with wins over Dallas, New England and San Diego in consecutive weeks. The Broncos managed to beat the sportsbooks in that stretch cashing all six weeks. Unfortunately they won just two of their last 10 games and missed the playoffs. Football bettors were not too happy as they cashed just three of those 10 games.
After faltering last season the Broncos made some noise by drafting a possible Marshall replacement in WR Demaryius Thomas out of Georgia Tech and then the face of College Football in QB Tim Tebow in the first round. Tebow was not expected to be drafted that high but McDaniels loved his upside. The Tebow jersey quickly became the most popular one in the NFL. The Broncos also added former highly touted QB Brady Quinn to bolster their lineup, but let’s face it he will not be a big help as he proved in Cleveland. The weapons at receiver are unproven. The number one receiver right now is ninth-year man Jabar Gaffney who caught 54 passes for 732 yards. Throw in Eddie Royal who had a terrible sophomore season with Orton at QB and journeyman Brandon Lloyd. Running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter are banged up and this could be very costly to the Denver offense if they are lingering injuries.
In the sports betting world the Broncos have not been very profitable. The Broncos are an even 32-32 SU over the last four seasons and 23-40-1 ATS in those games. Keep in mind that the Broncos are 0-9 ATS as home favorites off a SU favorite win.
It is going to be hard to duplicate that great start they had in 2009. The 2010 schedule features non division games against Baltimore, New York Jets, Houston, Tennessee and Indianapolis. Then in the AFC West they must face the San Diego Chargers twice, not an easy task. We do not see this team going .500 or better in 2010.
