The Bills finally fired coach Dick Jauron after four seasons and a combined 27-37 record. However, not sure his replacement, Chan Gailey is going to be much better going into the future. The ex-Dallas head coach was about tenth on Buffalo’s prospective coaching list, but he was the only guy that would go up north and try to fix his Buffalo mess.
It’s been 10 long seasons since this once proud Bills franchise appeared in a playoff game. And the way they’re headed it may be 10 more years before they get back to the playoffs.
What’s wrong with the Bills? The biggest problem for the Bills is an offense that ranked 30th in the league last season. The Terrell Owens experiment didn’t work as the Bills were once again one of the lowest scoring teams in the league putting up only 16 points per game. One sports betting note is that despite their low output of points they did manage to break even at the betting windows with an 8-8 record against the sports betting line.
The main issue for the Bills offense last season was quarterback and offensive line. Bills starter Trent Edwards was predicted to have a breakout season in 2009, however all he did was break down with injuries and lose his confidence. New coach Galey has experience developing quarterbacks and his presence may help Edwards. However, there will be a QB battle for the starting job between Edwards and Fitzpatrick, who did show some success last season. The offensive line was beset with injuries last season as all five of their starting lineman missed games at one time or another throughout the year. Even with all of them back, this is still a trouble spot for the Bills.
To help this struggling offense the Bills used their first draft pick on Clemson running back C.J. Spiller. The 9th overall selection is very explosive and the Bills are hoping that he can provide the spark that they’re looking for. However, running against ACC defender versus the defenses the likes of Miami, New England and the Jets will be much different for this 5’11, 195 lb running back.
The Bills schedule is pretty rugged this season. They’re in the tough AFC East and having to play two possible Super Bowl contenders in the Jets and Patriots twice is not easy. On the road this season they make non-division visits to Green Bay, Baltimore, Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Minnesota. Other than Kansas City, the Bills will be huge betting underdogs in all of the other games. Additionally, they have to play one of their home games in Toronto against the tough Bears. On a bright note, they do get Jacksonville, Detroit, and Cleveland at home, all teams that were under .500 last season. However, we expect all three of those teams to be improved this year.
BetUS.com has the NFL Future betting line on the Bills at 5.5 wins. My question is how are the Bills going to win even 5 games? Who are they going to beat? We think they’re going to lose their first four games (Miami, Green Bay, New England, and NY Jets) and the wheels are going to fall off the Gailey band wagon. They’ll have QB issues all season, Spiller won’t be the rookie sensation they’re expecting, and without an offensive line they’ll struggle putting points on the board. We’re predicting the Bills to win four games this season, maybe five. Play Buffalo Under the 5.5 wins.
