MLB: The Pitching Rich Boston Red Sox
by Tom Freese
When the Red Sox reversed the curse and won the World Series in 2004, it was because they had a top flight pitching staff that included future Hall of Famer's Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling. Don't get me wrong, the Sox also had a very potent lineup as well, but it was the pitching that put them over the top.
The 2007 Red Sox have the best record in baseball due largely to having perhaps the best pitching staff in baseball and a defense that ranks third in the American League in fielding percentage. They bolstered an already strong bullpen by adding Eric Gagne at the trading deadline. In so doing they gave up lefty starter Kason Gabbard, who was a tradable commodity due to Curt Schilling's return from injury. The starting five of Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield, and Jon Lester is very formidable. The bullpen is lights out with Hideki Okajima, Eric Gagne, and Jonathan Papelbon taking care of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
The offense is very potent as well. They can beat you with the long ball from the likes of Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Mike Lowell. They work pitchers over by taking pitches, which gets them into their opponents’ bullpen early in games. The Red Sox can also play small ball with the likes of Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo, who cause havoc on the basepaths. Catcher and team captain Jason Varitek handles pitchers as well as any catcher in baseball. Terry Francona is a players’ manager. This team has all the ingredients to win the World Series this year. We say they will get it done.
