Philadelphia at NY Giants
Sunday, December 13th, 8:20 ET
(Matchup)
by Rocky Atkinson

The New York Giants are in dire need of a win on Sunday night against their division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are tied for first place with the Dallas Cowboys as both teams are 8-4. The Cowboys defeated the Eagles so they would own the tie breaker for the division title. New York, meanwhile, is one game behind both Philly and Dallas at 7-5 but has a brutal schedule which includes a game against the Minnesota Vikings ahead of them. To say this game has playoff ramifications would be an understatement. The Eagles dismantled the Giants the first time these teams met by a final score of 40-17. Oddsmakers placed this game at a pick but public betting action on the Eagles have made them a steady one point favorite in Las Vegas and off-shore.

Philadelphia enters this game on a three game winning streak and they have also won five of their last seven ball games. Their latest victory came last Sunday when the Eagles went on the road and thrashed the Falcons 34-7 without both Brian Westbrook and DeSean Jackson. Westbrook will not play in Sunday’s game but Jackson is listed as probable. The emergence of LeSean McCoy at running back has lessened the pain of losing Westbrook. Over the last three games, this Eagles offense is averaging almost 128 yards per game on the ground and 4.5 yards per rush. The pass game has been clicking as well making this a very tough team to defend against. Donovan McNabb has been superb in recent weeks and has arguably the most weapons he’s ever had in his NFL career. Rookie receiver Jeremy Maclin has come on strong and tight end Brent Celek has become one of McNabb’s favorite red zone targets.

Eli Manning is having a solid season for the New York Giants. Steve Smith and Mario Manningham have been nice surprises at the wide receiver position. The Giants can also pound the ball down your throat with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. In fact, this Giants rushing attack is averaging almost 125 yards a game on the ground. All the heat however is going to be on Eli Manning come Sunday night. The Eagles are going to come after him with reckless abandon and it will be up to Eli to not make costly mistakes that turn into points for the opposing team. If Eli plays well and the struggling secondary of the Giants can step up, they have a chance at winning this ball game. However, if Manning lets the attacking style of defense that the Eagles like to play get to him, it will be difficult to overcome mental mistakes as the Eagles just have too many weapons on offense.
