NFL Week 12: What We Learned
by Rocky Atkinson
Broncos get back on track:
The Denver Broncos had lost four straight games before their match-up against the Giants on
Thanksgiving and had many people wondering if their 6-0 start was a fluke. Well the Broncos
regained some of the momentum they had lost during their skid by handling the Giants with ease by a
final score of 26-6. Kyle Orton played extremely well which is a good sign for Broncos backers as
he had struggled mightily in the four previous games leading up to the Thanksgiving Day showdown
with the Giants. Orton went 18/28 for 245 yards and a touchdown pass. Another positive for Denver
was the way they were able to run the ball against a pretty stout Giants' defensive front. Denver
rushed for 138 yards while the Giants only managed 57 yards on the ground. Denver won the battle of
the trenches on both sides of the ball and looked like the team we saw earlier in the year. They
are still one game back of the division leading San Diego Chargers but this is definitely a game
they can build on down the stretch towards the playoffs.
Brett Favre keeps cashing tickets for Vikings backers:
Last Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings were once again double digit favorites at home, this time against the
Chicago Bears. Once again they dominated by a score of 36-10 and covered the 10.5 point spread.
Brett Favre was magnificent as he completed 32 of 48 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns. He
also didn’t throw an interception and has only 3 all year. That is astonishing given the fact that
Favre has been prone to throw a lot of picks throughout his career. He is taking care of the ball
better than ever and this may be the best team he’s ever been on. The Vikings not only moved the
ball through the air but also rushed for 159 yards. Favre has a ton of weapons at his disposal and
he utilizes all of them. Not only is this team good on offense, they are pretty tough to score on
as well. They surrendered just 169 yards of total offense to the Bears and forced Jay Cutler to
throw two more interceptions. Minnesota has arguably the best front seven in the NFL and once they
get pro-bowl corner Antoine Winfield back, they will be even more difficult to score on.
New Orleans proves they are a legitimate Super Bowl contender:
I think it’s safe to say that football fans across the country were shocked at how the New Orleans
Saints blasted the New England Patriots on Monday Night. I’ve never seen a New England defense get
torched like they did this past week. Drew Brees proved he is right up there with Tom Brady and
Peyton Manning amongst the elite level of quarterbacks. Brees threw for 371 yards and 5 touchdowns,
with all 5 going to different receivers. This New Orleans team has so many weapons and a lot of
different ways to beat you on offense. The defense bent a little bit but they did not break. They
forced Tom Brady to throw two uncharacteristic interceptions and were able to keep New England out
of the end zone when it counted. This was an impressive showing and now you can finally say that
New Orleans is absolutely for real after putting a whooping on the Patriots. They now stand at
11-0 and certainly looked like a Super Bowl caliber team on the biggest stage against a veteran team
like New England.
