College Football Week 13: What We Learned
by Rocky Atkinson
Alabama survives in a dog fight against Auburn:
Alabama did not play like a potential National Championship contender on Friday against their arch
rival Auburn. They failed to cover the spread as 10 point road favorites but still remain undefeated after the 26-21 win over the Tigers. The offense in particular looked stagnant at times and they actually got out-gained by Auburn in total yards 332-291. What is even more concerning about the Alabama offense was that they were only able to gain 73 yards rushing on 35 carries for an average of 2.1 yards per carry. This team is built around running the football and playing great defense and Alabama will need a healthy Mark Ingram, who suffered a minor injury in the Auburn game, at full strength if they want to have any chance at beating Florida in the SEC Championship Game. As for the defense, Auburn was able to really run the ball effectively on this Alabama defense. They rushed for 151 yards on 32 carries. Now, Alabama has to face one of the top rushing attacks in the country and Nick Saban has to be worried about how his team is going to stop Tim Tebow and company from pounding the ball down their throats like Auburn was able to. Alabama is a good team but will have to play better on both sides of the ball in order to beat the Florida Gators.
West Virginia ruins Pitt’s shot at outright championship:
The Pitt Panthers controlled their own destiny; win their last two games against West Virginia and Cincinnati and they would be the undisputed champs of the Big East. Well, West Virginia’s win over Pitt last Friday ruined Pittsburgh’s hopes of an outright championship. Now they absolutely must beat Cincinnati to be co-champs and also get a BCS Bowl Berth. It wasn’t the most exciting game to watch as both quarterbacks failed to throw for over 200 yards but both rushing attacks were able to find running lanes on the opposing team’s defense. Pittsburgh rushed for 146 yards on 29 carries however the Pittsburgh defense had a very hard time stopping the run themselves. West Virginia racked up 205 yards on the ground against the Pitt defense. Quarterback Bill Stull was held in check as well as went 16 of 30 for 179 yards. He also threw two interceptions and only one touchdown pass. In order for Pitt to stop the undefeated Bearcats of Cincinnati, they will have to find more balance on offense and find a way to stop Cincinnati from running the ball as effectively as West Virginia did last week.
Georgia upsets Georgia Tech:
Sports books in Las Vegas and off-shore cleaned up when Georgia upset Georgia Tech last Saturday. Two-thirds of the betting action came in on Georgia Tech minus the points forcing the line to move from 7 to 9.5 by game time. Georgia had struggled in recent weeks but they showed that they still have plenty of speed and athleticism to beat a Top 10 team. The most surprising thing about the game was the way Georgia was able to hammer the ball right through the teeth of the Georgia Tech front seven. The Bull Dogs rushed for 339 yards on 44 carries, which is an average of a whopping 7.7 yards per carry. Defensively, Georgia was able to contain the Tech running game but still gave up 205 yards rushing but that came on 51 rushing attempts. Georgia’s ability to get out to an early lead helped them immensely because Georgia Tech did have to try and throw the ball late in the game which is not their strong suit. It seems that the SEC simply has a lot more athletic ability than the ACC and that’s something to remind bettors of as Bowl season approaches.
