Top NFL Teams to Bet Against
by Rocky Atkinson

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 1-6 ATS

This season has been an absolute train wreck for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are winless on the season at 0-7 and have failed to cover the spread in all but 1 of their first 7 games. The biggest issue has been at the quarterback position. Byron Leftwich entered the year as the starter but was quickly replaced by Josh Johnson. Johnson however, has not been the answer the Bucs were looking for. In the 5 games he has played, he has thrown for just 685 yards and 4 touchdowns. Meanwhile he has thrown twice as many picks as touchdowns with a total of 8 interceptions. The Bucs’ quarterbacks haven’t been getting any help by their rushing attack either as Tampa ranks 24th in rushing yards per game. Defensively, the Bucs rank 29th in points allowed as they are giving up 29 points per game. Teams have had tremendous success running the ball right down their throats to the tune of 162.4 yards a game. Things look bleak for this Tampa Bay team as they have major question marks on both sides of the ball. They have played some tough opponents but have been embarrassed as heavy underdogs. For now, this looks like a definite team to go against.

Carolina Panthers: 1-5 ATS

After winning the AFC South last year, the Carolina Panthers had high hopes for 2009. Unfortunately, this team has consistently struggled throughout the first half of this year. They are 2-4 SU but their wins have come against two bad teams, Tampa Bay and Washington. The most pressing concern has been the play of quarterback Jake Delhomme. He has thrown just 4 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions! Delhomme and company are ranked 22nd in the NFL in passing yards per game as they are averaging just 183.8 yards per game through the air. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are still doing a good job of rushing the ball but this unit is only putting up 15 points per game. The defense does not give up a lot of yards but have been allowing a lot of points. When your offense consistently turns the ball over, you are often put in a bad position to keep teams from scoring. However, teams have had tremendous success running the ball on the defensive unit. They are ranked 26th in rushing defense and if you cannot stop the run, you are going to have a tough time beating anybody in the NFL. Carolina has talent but Delhomme has to improve his play or else this is going to be a long year for the Panthers.

Tennessee Titans: 1-5 ATS

Tennessee is arguably the biggest disappointment thus far this season. They were a 13-3 team a year ago but are yet to win a game in 2009. Two weeks ago, the Titans were absolutely embarrassed by the New England Patriots as they got hammered by a score of 59-0! This defense has been torched all year long especially against quality quarterbacks. The secondary has been hampered by injuries and rank dead last in passing defense. Opposing offenses are averaging more than 310 yards a game just through the air. They are also dead last in points allowed giving up an average of 33 points per game. The offense meanwhile has struggled throwing the ball as they really don’t have a true number one receiver. It also doesn’t help that Kerry Collins is starting to show signs that his age is catching up to him. He has thrown just 5 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for a quarterback rating of 62.0. He will be replaced this week by Vince Young who can hopefully bring life to a team that has been just plain awful this year. If Young struggles and makes costly mistakes, this is another go against team for the remainder of the year.

Other teams to go against:
Kansas City Chiefs 2-5 ATS
Pittsburgh Steelers 2-5 ATS
St. Louis Rams 2-5 ATS
Washington Redskins 2-5 ATS
