San Francisco 49'ers O/U 8 1/2
Finished 2009: 8-8 SU; 9-4-3 ATS; 5-2-1 ATS home; 4-2-2 ATS road; O/U 5-11-0
San Francisco is favored to win the NFC West. It traded away Shaun Hill, which makes Alex Smith the number 1 guy. Interesting to note though that the 49'ers went out and signed veteran David Carr as his backup. One other notable pickup is Ted Ginn Jr. from the Dolphins in a trade.
The 49'ers are loaded with talent, and have an intense head coach in Mike Singletary.
Frank Gore will once again be called upon to take the majority of the load out of the backfield, and Smith has a bunch of weapons to throw to including Michael Crabtree who will play his first full season.
Patrick Willis is arguably the best inside linebacker in the league…a complete freak.
Here's a quick look at the 49'ers schedule; @ Seattle; vs. New Orleans; @ Kansas City; @ Atlanta; vs. Philadelphia; vs. Oakland; @ Carolina; vs. Denver; vs. St. Louis; vs. Tampa Bay; @ Arizona; @ Green Bay; vs. Seattle; @ San Diego; @ St. Louis; vs. Arizona.
Keep in mind as well that their Week 8 matchup vs. Denver will be played in England, and then they'll have a bye the following week.
So where are the "gimme's" in this schedule? They play their division rival Seahawks twice, with a tough game right off the top in Seattle; I know the Hawks are strong at home, but because of the new coach/system up there, I'm going to give both games to the 49'ers. They play the Rams twice, and barring disaster should be able to take both of those games as well; they also play Arizona twice, and I expect they'll take the home game in that series. The only other "gimme's" are Oakland and possibly Kansas City.
When we add that up, that's 7 supposed games that this team should win; has this team progressed enough to knock off a San Diego on the road, or a Philadelphia at home?
I think yes; barring a complete collapse against the weaker teams, and taking into account that the 49'ers should be able to win a couple of the tougher ones, I believe this club is capable of winning 9 games in 2010 and therefore recommend a play on the OVER!
I'll be back next time with a look at Arizona Cardinals.
