The Big Ten has seen a sort of rebirth as one of the top Conferences in the NCAA. From 1979
to 1989, the Big Ten saw four National Champions from three different schools. This year the
conference boasts nine teams with a winning record and seven of those have already eclipsed the
20-win marker. The ACC-Big Ten Challenge this year came right down to the last day as both leagues
were knotted up at three wins apiece. The Big Ten fell just one game short of winning the Challenge
for the first time in its 10 year history.
This year’s league featured an All-Sophomore conference first team with Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas
getting Big Ten Player of the Year. Joining him were Manny Harris of Michigan, Evan Turner of
Ohio State, Talor Battle of Penn State and JaJuan Johnson of Purdue. This is the first time this has
happened in the league’s history.
The balance of the conference is uncanny as nine teams have 17 or more wins this season. Although
the conference is unlikely to have a number one seed, many prognosticators still believe that the
Big Ten will get eight schools into the “Big Dance” and that looks more and more likely seeing how
the Big Ten Conference Tournament is shaping up.
