How does the league perform depending on its winning or losing streak entering a particular game? A simple query using the exclusive MTi SDQL Trends provides some interesting results.

Looking at the data since 2004, the straight up data is not overly interesting. In all winning streak situations, league wide performance is over .500 and all losing streak situations yield performance under .500 except for teams coming off a single loss. Teams coming off of a single loss have been 54 games over .500.

Against the spread results prove more interesting. Teams that are on winning streaks, or are “hot” do not make particularly strong plays. Teams on 1-5 game winning streaks are all under .500 and teams on 6+ game winning streaks are not a consistent strong play for NBA bettors.

Losing streaks are a different story. Teams that have lost a single game are 70 games over .500. Teams on 2-5 game losing streaks all fall slightly below expectations. Once teams get on 6+ game losing streaks, they become great ATS play on situations. Teams in this situation are 230-173-7 ATS or a moneymaking 57% winner. An even greater spot has been the rare occasion when a team is on a 13+ game losing streak as these teams go 13-4-1 or 76% ATS.
