Super Bowl Prop Bets
by Lenny Del Genio
It's not just the pointspread and the over/under line that are of interest to sports bettors on Super Bowl Sunday. One thing that
differentiates betting on the Super Bowl from betting on the rest of the NFL season is that wide and sheer amount of propositional wagers that can be made on the game. These betting opportunities can range from interesting things like predicting the MVP of the game to the absurd such as guessing if the coin toss will result in heads or tails.
As usual, Bodog has already posted a series of team and player props for the game, which by the way opened up with the Packers favored by 2.5 over the Steelers and has since been moved to Packers minus 3 at most books. The over/under line is currently at 45 points. We will be releasing our 25* NFL Playoff Total of the Year on this game (won w/ Under last year) as well as an Oddsmaker Mismatch (14-4-1 this year) on the side.
However, for now, we want to look at the different prop wagers. The popularity of Super Bowl prop betting dates back 25 years to
Super Bowl XX when the Bears met the Patriots. At the time, William "Refrigerator" Perry was all the rage and there was a lot of
talk on whether or not the Bears big man would score a TD in the game. During the course of the regular season, the Monsters of
the Midway had given the ball to 'the Fridge' in several short yardage, goal line situations with success. Capitalizing on this
phenomenon, many Vegas sportsbooks put a wager up on the board (at 40/1 odds) that allowed the public to wager on whether or not
the Fridge would cross the goal line in Super Bowl XX. By kickoff, the odds had incredibly dropped to 2/1 odds as the public decided 'what the hell' and got down on Perry. Of course, as we all know now, Perry did score and the books got busted big. As an aside, we thought it was a shameless decision by HC Ditka to hand the ball to Perry rather than Hall of Fame RB Walter Payton, who played his entire career in Chicago and was making his only Super Bowl appearance. Sounds to us like old "Iron Mike" may have gotten down at 40:1 odds! It should be noted that Ditka has since apologized many times for not giving Payton the ball.
By the way, that game was probably the perfect time to introduce prop bets. At the time, it was the most lopsided Super Bowl in history with the Bears crushing the Pats 46-10 for the franchise's only Super Bowl win.
Anyways, the point of this article was to pick out a few props we like and tell you why. But first, a 'word of warning.' Wagering on props like the coin toss or 'what color the Gatorade will be' are not recommended. If you win money betting on these kind of silly wagers, then good for you. If you lose, well then, you probably asked for it.
Here are two Super Bowl prop bets that we can recommend wagering on:
1. Will there be a defensive/special teams TD scored in the game? Yes +145 | No -170
We like to look for at least a few props where we can get 'plus money.' This is one such opportunity. Both teams ranked in the top six in the league in takeaways with the Steelers forcing 35 and the Packers 32. In the respective conference championship games, both teams scored a defensive TD. Last time Pittsburgh was in a Super Bowl, James Harrison returned an INT nearly 100 yards for a touchdown. Last time Green Bay was in a Super Bowl, return specialist Desmond Howard returned a punt for a TD. In last year's Super Bowl, the Saints clinched victory over Colts with an INT return for a TD. +145 odds is great value.
2. Which will be the highest scoring quarter? 1st Q +400 | 2nd Q +160 | 3rd Q +400 | 4th Q +200
Again, we are trying to look for 'plus money.' We looked over the last three Super Bowls and found there has been a disproportionate amount of scoring in the 4th quarter. In fact, those three fourth quarters saw: 15, 24 and 21 points scored. In sum, of the 129 points scored the last three Super Bowls, 59 of them were scored in the final quarter. There is always a feeling out process early in the game.
Note that we will be including a free pick on the MVP award prop bet in our side selection for the game!
