NFL: What The Hell Is Going On Around Here?
by Lenny Del Genio

To paraphrase the great Vince Lombardi, if you were a football bettor on Sunday, then you are probably still scratching your head after watching the result of several
NFL picks in Week 5. Consider the following:
Jacksonville (41.5) at Buffalo (-2.5): The Jaguars went from down 13-3 with one minute left in the first half to up 36-20 halfway through the fourth quarter.
St. Louis (44) at Detroit (-3): The Rams entered this game with the third-best point differential in the conference. They are now -13 on the season.
Atlanta (-3) at Cleveland (41.5): This game was much closer than the final score indicated. The Falcons needed a late INT return for TD to earn a cover for their bettors. The Browns four losses have come by a combined 22 points (1-2-1 ATS). Atlanta was the lone road favorite to cover on Sunday.
Tampa Bay (38.5) at Cincinnati (-7): The Bengals averaged 5.7 yards per rush but allowed the Bucs to score 10 points in the game's final 90 seconds for a 24-21 outright win.
Chicago (33) at Carolina (-3): This may have been the 'ugliest' 17-point outright win in recent NFL betting history. Bears QB Todd Collins, filling in for the injured Jay Cutler, tossed four interceptions and averaged less than two yards per pass attempt, becoming only the fourth Chicago QB in history to win a game while registering such numbers. Overall, there were seven turnovers and just 394 total yards between the teams. This is made even worse when you consider Bears RB Matt Forte had more than 100 yds rushing in the first quarter. Collins finished 6 of 16 for 32 yards with a 6.2 passer rating. The Bears now have just 70 TOTAL yards passing in their last two games, yet are 4-1 SU on the season.
Green Bay (-3) at Washington (45.5): The case against road favorites was certainly made on Sunday. The Packers led 13-3, outgained the 'Skins 427-373 and had five sacks yet found a way to lose in OT. In 18 fourth quarter possessions, Green Bay now has just two TD's.
NY Giants (48.5) at Houston (-3): The Texans came in with the top-rated offense. They were held to 195 yards total, eight of which came on the ground.
New Orleans (-7) at Arizona (46): Brutal beat for Under bettors. Cardinals led 23-20 with less than thirty seconds remaining and the Saints had the ball deep in their own territory. The total was 45.5 and 46 for most. Drew Brees threw an interception, which was promptly returned by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for a TD to push the game Over. And Cromartie didn't exactly have a clear path to the end zone either. The Saints outgained Arizona in this game by a ridiculous 373-194 margin, but turned the ball over four times and allowed three defensive/special teams TD's.
San Diego (-7) at Oakland (44): The Chargers came into this game having beaten the Silver and Black thirteen straight times. Their first four drives resulted in a pair of turnovers in the red zone and a pair of blocked punts that were coverted into nine Oakland points (TD, safety). The Raiders also had a defensive TD in a game they were outgained 506-279. God, did road favorites suck in Week 5.
Tennessee (43.5) at Dallas (-7): Is there a more frustrating team to watch than the Cowboys? They outgained the Titans 511-321, but QB Romo threw three interceptions and the team committed 12 penalties. Romo was also sacked six times after going down only once in his previous 128 pass attempts. Don't even get us started on the excessive celebration penalty that followed a TD that squared the game away at 27-27.
