Churchill Downs allows a maximum field of 20 starters in the Kentucky Derby. Fans often ask me, “How do they decide which 3-year-olds will break from the gate on the first Saturday of May?” The selection process is completely dependent on each horse’s earnings in Graded Stakes races.
