NFL Thursday Night Preview: Oakland at San Diego
by Eddie Keen

The Oakland Raiders face off against the San Diego Chargers in this Week 10 Thursday Night Prime Time Matchup. This will be the second Thursday Night Game of the season after the opening day Thursday Night Game between the Saints and the Packers back in September that kicked off the season. The Packers were five point favorites in that matchup and ended up winning it 42-34. In this week’s Thursday Night Game, the Chargers were opened up as seven point home favorites.

Oakland and San Diego both sit at a .500 season going into this prime time matchup with four wins and four losses. The Raiders have had much better luck at the betting window with a 5-3 against the spread record while San Diego has only covered two games all season for a weak 2-6 ATS record. Both teams are also coming into this matchup rather cold; Oakland is off back to back losses both SU and ATS and San Diego is coming off three straight losses both SU and ATS.

Taking a look at past results between these teams, Oakland has seemed to clean up at the betting window over the last few seasons. Last year, the Raiders beat the Chargers outright in both matchups. They beat them 35-27 at home in their first matchup last season as seven point home underdogs and then came back and beat them again on the road 28-13 as huge 13 point underdogs. Back in 2009, Oakland covered both matchups against the spread but lost both straight up. They lost at home 24-20 as ten point home dogs and also lost 24-16 on the road but easily covered the spread as they were getting 15.5 points in the second game. That makes Oakland a perfect 4-0 ATS when playing against the San Diego Chargers the last two seasons.

The Chargers have won all but one home game this season, but looking at their home against the spread record, they have only covered one matchup. Oakland has covered all three road games this season including outright wins over Denver (23-20 as 3 point road underdogs) and Houston (25-20 as 4.5 point road underdogs).

The Raiders are 8-2 ATS when coming off a loss but are only 1-5 ATS when coming off back to back home losses. Oakland is 9-2 ATS after allowing 30 points or more in their last matchup while San Diego is only 1-5 ATS after scoring 35 points or more in their last game.

The Raiders average about 28 points per game when playing on the road but they average giving up about 27 points per game. San Diego has very similar numbers so far this season, averaging about 27 points per game at home and has given up about 25 points per game on average.

Will the Chargers break this 0-4 ATS run against the Raiders or could Oakland make it three straight outright wins in a row with a SU win this Thursday? Get on the Winning Side by checking out Eddie Keen’s NFL Selection!
