MLB: WANG-tastic
by Alex Smart
Chien-Ming Wang has, for the last two plus seasons, been overshadowed not by performances or results, but by two other starters that have been given more air time on ESPN.
Since breaking into the majors in late 2005, Wang has 51 wins in 86 starts. In his first full year he recorded a 19-6 record, but lost out in the Cy-young voting to Johan Santana, who recorded an identical record. Those that thought his 2006 record was a fluke were sadly mistaken as Wang once again finished second in the AL with a 19-7 record being kept out of first place in the Cy Young voting by Josh Beckett's 20-7 record.
This season Wang is the first pitcher in the junior league to get to five wins. The 28 year-old from Tainan, Taipei is starting to look like the stud hurler that Yankees’ fans have talked about since his early days.
So when a solid pitcher and a public team go to the diamond, many would expect high lines and profits to be minimal. However, that has not been the case with Wang as the following angles will show.
The New York Yankees are 8-0 at home when Wang went 8+ innings in his previous start and the Pinstripes scored seven or fewer runs in that start. New York has won these 8 games by an average of 3.8 runs per game.
Wang is 14-7-1 'Under' as a home favorite of -150 to -200.
Wang is 12-6-1 'Over' as a home favorite of greater than -200.
Wang and the Yankees have been solid investments regardless of site when the starter is lined as a greater than -150 favorite. In this role at home, the Pinstripes are 28-12. On foreign soi,l the Yankees are a much better 11-2.
A sign of a good front end rotation starter is his ability to pitch their team to a win off a team loss or several losses. These guys are referred to as "stoppers". Andy Pettitte is believed by the TV experts and pundits to be one of those starters that are able to bring a losing streak to a halt, but the results don't back-up the so called experts’ beliefs. But Wang is one of those guys. At home the Yankees are 13-2 off at least one loss when Wang goes to the bump and they are a more than respectable 14-5 on the road in the same situation. Wagering on this simple angle would have produced a 27-7 record and over 16 units of profit.
But it's not just positive trends that can be beneficial from a view point of one’s bankroll as Wang and the Yankees have struggled on the road as underdogs, recording a 1-5 mark.
